Here are links to a few great videos and books about the subject of happiness that I&#8217;ve watched, read and listened to (audiobooks are the greatest gift to commuters in the world &#8211; and your local library has so many&#8230; for FREE!!!) recently. I&#8217;ve started jotting down takeaways from each of them, but I figure I should share them for the people who want to actually go and experience these pieces of <strong>content about happiness</strong> for themselves.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: large;"><strong>Why Happiness is the New Productivity (The Story of Mindvalley)</strong></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;"><img class="alignleft" alt="Vishen Lakhiani - CEO of Mindvalley" src="http://www.mindvalley.com/assets/images/homepage/img-vishen-new.jpg" width="360" height="344" />This video features a talk by <a href="http://www.vishenlakhiani.com/">Vishen Lakhiani</a>, the founder and CEO of Mindvalley. If you haven&#8217;t heard of him and the company yet, you will soon. He offers 10 tangible takeaways to help you make your life and the lives of everyone at your workplace happier.<span id="more-820"></span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;">The first item on the list was something I&#8217;ve been thinking about doing already, but keep putting off because it&#8217;s not convenient. Shawn Achor, who I&#8217;ve mentioned a <a href="http://www.pathikbhatt.com/2012/10-experiences-that-made-my-life-better-in-2012/">few times before</a>, talks about keeping a gratitude journal in his book The Happiness Advantage. My wife and I started this a while and and have quite a few entries, but we&#8217;ve both started slacking. <p><span style="font-size: small;">This author travels to 4 different places around the world that are supposed to be the happiest on the planet: Denmark, Singapore, Mexico, (and of course) California and offers great lessons and takeaways from each place. It&#8217;s surprising how different each location is and how it&#8217;s possible to be happy in each of those lifestyles.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-size: large;"><strong>The Power of a Positive No by William Ury</strong></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;"><img class="alignright" alt="keep calm and just say no" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-yqNIemwugXM/UPNwtzUcwoI/AAAAAAAAByI/hfbuSE0D58g/s1600/keep-calm-and-just-say-no.png" width="360" height="420" />When you&#8217;re newly married, trying to get an MBA while working at a job you enjoy (if you don&#8217;t like it then it&#8217;s easy to put down the work and just go home) and living at home with your parents, time is your most valuable resource. This is true even if you&#8217;re not trying to do a million things at once. So often times you are faced with the challenge of saying &#8220;no&#8221; to people&#8230; your spouse, family, friends, boss etc. &#8211; not because you don&#8217;t want to spend time with them and do things with them, but because you have committed to something such as school and that will suffer if you give in to everyone. Having to say &#8220;no&#8221; tends to reduce our happiness unless we approach it in the way that the author does: </span></p>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-size: small;">First think of the YES &#8211; what is it that YOU want to do?</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: small;">Then confirm with yourself how in order to do this YES, you need to say NO and follow through.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: small;">Finally follow up with another YES &#8211; an alternative positive outcome for the person (&#8220;If I can&#8217;t help you with that today, how about we work on it this weekend when I have time?&#8221; Of course it&#8217;s not always that easy, but that&#8217;s why this book is good, it takes you through a lot of scenarios)</span></li>

Both us were Social Media Co-chairs and Aalap also spoke on a digital marketing panel with other marketing experts there. It was great working with him and I&#8217;m glad he took some time out to share some lessons he&#8217;s learned about entrepreneurship while starting his company, <a href="http://www.someconnect.com/">SoMe Social Media</a>.<span id="more-805"></span></span></p>
<p><strong>What are the biggest barriers to entry into social media for most companies?</strong></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;">The biggest barrier to entry is the existing competition. Chicago in particular has some pretty awesome social media marketing firms and it takes time to be able to acquire the type of clients and or experience in order to be able to do the work that you want. My best advice (something that I ignored early on) is to pick specific verticals that are of interest to you and focus on delivering high-value products/tools/services to create that expertise in that niche.</span></p>
<p><strong>What is your favorite aspect of social media marketing?</strong></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;">I&#8217;ve grown to love Twitter and the possibilities it provides for digital PR, lead outreach, and general branding and awareness.</span></p>
<p><strong>Pathik:</strong> <span style="font-size: small;">I agree Twitter is great! One of the greatest features of Twitter is that it gives you direct access to everyone who uses it. You&#8217;re not limited to just your friends or connections, so there&#8217;s so much data and information available through their search tool.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>What are a few of the top skills needed to be a successful entrepreneur?</strong></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;">I would say, patience, passion, and a willingness to constantly (strategically) pivot if need be.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>What have you learned from your failures?</strong></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;">One of my biggest failures early on in my entrepreneurial career was to underprice my services relative to the value I was offering. I consistently &#8220;gave away&#8221; stuff, be it products, or services, without truly knowing what my end goal was. Fast forward to today, where I almost fell in the same trap again. This time though, I used more tools to collect information on our product offerings and services (be it conversations, surveys, polls, existing client research) and created more specific goals for any &#8220;free&#8221; services we were testing (both tangible &amp; intangible). This way, it created a more dynamic, and value oriented company and kept me motivated to build better solutions based on my tests.</span></p>
<p><strong><span style="font-size: medium;">What motivates you?</span></strong></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;">I&#8217;m motivated by my clients – and how I can work with them to digitally market their business for optimal success – be it traffic, revenue, loyalty, engagement or all four (or more). It&#8217;s exciting for me to go into our kickoff meeting and outlining all the possibilities and then working towards those metrics over the engagement.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>How do you build a strong customer base?</strong></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;">I&#8217;m pretty old fashioned about this in the sense that I strongly believe that great service, tied to specific benchmarks and metrics will always underly any efforts for further customer acquisition (and customer retention). It&#8217;s not about just offering a &#8220;great&#8221; service anymore &#8211; &#8220;great&#8221; means different things to everyone. With today&#8217;s tools &amp; reporting capabilities, you have to continually also show value for the services &amp; products you provide and deliver on and that&#8217;s what will keep your client base satisfied in the long run.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>Who has been your greatest inspiration?</strong></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;">My parents are among my biggest source of inspiration in the entrepreneurial space– they&#8217;ve created multiple successful businesses and exited them to then re-start and continue the process again. They love being in new markets and learning about new services/products and then creating/building a business around it.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>What is your favorite aspect of being an entrepreneur?</strong></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;">I love the fact that we have a lot of flexibility. I can shape and create the lifestyle that I want and I&#8217;m not tied to anyone or anybody specific. I love that my role is not a role that has been defined by someone else, but rather, it&#8217;s me that decides what to do everyday. While this life that I just painted doesn&#8217;t happen early on, eventually, as your business progresses and grows, you can take the opportunity to mold your business to be the way you want it to be.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>What sacrifices have you had to make to be a successful entrepreneur?</strong></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;">One of the biggest sacrifices I&#8217;ve made in my journey as an entrepreneur is the amount of time I spend with my family and friends. It&#8217;s one of the most hardest sacrifices to make because when you&#8217;re in a startup, you live, breath, and pretty much die by the startup. As you move out though of that stage, the light at the end of the tunnel is extremely motivating and being able to have the freedom to spend as much time with your family is there if you can build the right processes and systems in your business.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>What gave you the idea for PrintEco?</strong></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;">I saw a significant problem of wasteful printing at University of Illinois and during my internships. It was a big enough problem that I figured needed a simple solution. After gathering a lot of feedback, I came upon my current idea. It started out as a side project but kept snowballing from there.<span id="more-790"></span></span></p>
<p><strong>What are some other ways people and businesses are wasting resources that can easily be prevented?</strong></p>
<p>There are many companies that demand that workers be in the office all the time. I think there are times where it may be as effective to have them work remotely. Imagine how much travel savings that would add up to. That being said, I think balance is key. For our team, we work 70% in the office and 30% from wherever else. We worked from a boat a couple of times&#8230;that was awesome.</p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>What are some pieces of advice for college students who are interested in entrepreneurship?</strong></span></p>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-size: small;">Learn how to sell/hustle.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: small;">Learn how to build the things you&#8217;re interested in pursuing. I think engineering of some sort would be useful for this. Even a few classes would help.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: small;">Take business classes like strategy, marketing, accounting, finance, management.</span></li>
</ul>
<p><strong><span style="font-size: medium;">What are the top 3 things that every successful entrepreneur has to be?</span></strong></p>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-size: small;">Resourceful</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: small;">Relentless</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: small;">Flexible</span></li>
</ul>
<p><strong><span style="font-size: medium;">What have been some of your failures, and what have you learned from them?</span></strong></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;">I failed early on in college with a couple of start-up ideas that were overly ambitious. There&#8217;s nothing wrong with that notion but ultimately, I believe one needs to start &#8220;small&#8221; in order to build up to a larger vision.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>How do you build a successful customer base?</strong></span></p>
<p>Start with the customers that experience the most pain from not having your solution. I learned that the hard way but at least now we have customers! From there, make sure you deliver an amazing product/service. Then, you can start branching out; otherwise you run the risk of spreading yourself too thin.</p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>How did you decide on starting PrintEco in Chicago?</strong></span></p>
<p>I believe Chicago is a great place for us since there are so many potential customers (Fortune 500 companies, mid-sized companies, large schools etc.). In addition, the start-up network is becoming very strong here. Although the weather sometimes makes me rethink my decision!</p>
<p><strong>Pathik:</strong> Yeah, Chicago is definitely getting recognized for its start-up scene more now. Resources like <a href="http://www.1871.com/">1871</a> have helped business come together and find place to call their own. Sites like <a href="http://www.builtinchicago.org/">Built in Chicago</a> are good places to learn more about the start-up scene in this city.</p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>What business book has inspired you the most?</strong></span></p>
<p>From a entrepreneurial standpoint, I really liked &#8220;The Magic of Thinking Big&#8221; by David Schwartz . It&#8217;s an old one but everything he says is just as relevant today. Personally, it truly did change the way I think for the better.</p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>What is your favorite aspect of being an entrepreneur?</strong></span></p>
<p>Unlimited potential growth; I&#8217;m not limited by other barriers. I can go as far as my mind takes me.</p>
<p><strong><span style="font-size: medium;">What has been your most successful form of marketing?</span></strong></p>
<p><strong></strong><span style="font-size: small;">Currently, in person networking has been really great. Also, going to relevant conferences has also proved to be very effective. PR helps tremendously too.</span></p>
<p><strong><span style="font-size: medium;">Where you see yourself and PrintEco in 10 years?</span></strong></p>
<p><strong></strong><span style="font-size: small;">I see myself back in school thinking of the next big thing. As for the business, we will probably seek an exit opportunity before then so we can provide a return to our investors and ourselves.</span></p>

After spending some time behind the desk post-graduation, Shaan decided to learn programming and take his talents to Austin so he can help others do what he did. He is now teaching the first batch of students learn how to become developers in a matter of weeks.</span><span style="font-size: small;"> I appreciate him taking the time to share his tips and experiences with me as he starts his new venture.</span></p>
<p><strong>What ignited the spark in you to start a new business venture and how did the idea for MakerSquare come about?</strong></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;">I wanted to give other people the opportunity to do what I did. Switch careers into tech. The idea for MakerSquare quickly gained momentum after talking to Ravi in Austin, and was solidified once we got Shehzan and Harsh on board. The groundwork for creating a web development school was laid out for us by the awesome team at Bitmaker Labs.<span id="more-774"></span></span></p>
<p><strong>How did you decide on the location for MakerSquare?</strong></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;">We decided on Austin because it was ripe for a school like this. Ravi wanted to <a href="http://www.devjumpstart.com/">learn how to code</a>, and asked me whether I should take similar courses throughout the country. After talking for a while about courses in Chicago, San Fran and NYC, we thought &#8220;Why the heck isn&#8217;t there a program in Austin?&#8221;. That&#8217;s when we decided on the location. I was thrilled because I&#8217;ve always wanted to live in Austin after visiting there a few times in the last few years. If you haven&#8217;t been, you should go. It&#8217;s an amazing place.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>How do you find people to bring into your organization that truly care about the organization the way you do?</strong></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;">You find people who care about helping other people. That&#8217;s what this business is all about. Empowering other people to live better, more fulfilling lives through a career in web development, or a career helping startups get off the ground. If you find people that care way more about the people you&#8217;re servicing than anything else, you&#8217;ve built yourself a great team. Elon Musk said something at SXSW that resonated with me. He said one mistake he&#8217;s made over and over is hiring people for their hard skills instead of their personality. Find the right personality fit, and everything else will fall into place. </span></p>
<p><strong>What is your greatest fear, and how do you manage fear?</strong></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;">Regret. I manage it by making decisions that I know I won&#8217;t regret. I don&#8217;t want to look back 10 years from now and regret that I didn&#8217;t take a leap towards my goals. I want to look back and at least know I tried. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>What is the best way to achieve long-term success?</strong></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;">Don&#8217;t delay anything. Take baby steps towards your long-term goal, and don&#8217;t stop.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>How do you build a successful customer base?</strong></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;">Provide a quality product. A great way to see if the product or service you are providing is valuable is to charge your customers for it. If customers continue to pay and are happy with the product, you&#8217;re on the right track. Don&#8217;t get distracted by anything else. Get your customers to pay for your service, and keep them happy. The rest of your business will take care of itself if you can do those two things. </span></p>
<p><strong>If you had the chance to start your career over again, what would you do differently?</strong></p>
<p>I would have learned how to code at an earlier age.</p>

<p><strong>                                                                                                                                                  I know you&#8217;re just getting started, but what has been your favorite aspect of being an entrepreneur so far?</strong></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;">The journey hands down. I am learning way too much and I still don&#8217;t know shit. It&#8217;s so much fun and it feels right. I have no idea what will happen beyond <a href="http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/saucee/saucee-eat-more-creatively" target="_blank">Kickstarter</a>, but we&#8217;re just focused on doing it right and embracing where we are today.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>What advice would you give college students who want to become entrepreneurs?</strong></span></p>
<ol start="1">
<li><span style="font-size: small;">Love college &#8211; explore and experience whatever inspires you</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: small;">Work hard &#8211; academics, friends, partners, professional development, organizations</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: small;">Stay creative &#8211; whatever that might mean to you</span></li>
</ol>
<p><strong><span style="font-size: medium;">How did you decide on the location for your business?</span></strong></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;">Environment definitely matters to us. Find the place where you feel energized and motivated or explore ways to re-create it. For me, I just need to be in a city I love with my Macbook Air, <a href="https://www.facebook.com/philzcoffee" target="_blank">Philz coffee</a> and music. Our office is in San Francisco and we also draw lots of inspiration from Berkeley and the greater Bay Area.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>What do you do when you&#8217;re not thinking about sauces?</strong></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;">Music keeps me energized and in a groove. I can listen to and appreciate any music that has a story behind it. It&#8217;s an experience and it inspires me to open up and channel myself into the things that I do. Right now, I am deep into <a href="https://www.facebook.com/yelawolf" target="_blank">YelaWolf&#8217;s</a> music &#8211; truly a unique artist with raw talent and deep purpose.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>Can you offer some tips for getting your project funded on Kickstarter? </strong></span></p>
<ol start="1">
<li><span style="font-size: small;">Open up your story and why this matters to you &#8211; be thoughtful about your campaign and don&#8217;t worry about your fears &#8211; if you truly believe, your network will too. And feel free to take your time to polish it. It&#8217;s such an incredible experience and a very emotional step &#8211; love it!</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: small;">Plan your outreach and distribution ahead of time &#8211; as soon you launch, hit it hard and don&#8217;t stop</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: small;">Stress test your numbers &#8211; think about every potential cost, hurdle or issue ahead of time, build it in to the numbers and be open with your backers about it &#8211; the community is there to support and they know how hard work these projects are to complete. Design a model that achieves your goals and remember Kickstarter is about more than just funds. </span></li>
</ol>

<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>Do you think Derrick Rose is coming back this year?</strong></span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"> If he absolutely wasn&#8217;t coming back, they (the Bulls) likely would have made an announcement by now. I sure hope so. The Bulls games just haven&#8217;t been the same this year without him. The buzz in the UC has been missing.</span></p>
<p><strong>Pathik:</strong> <span style="font-size: small;">I hope you&#8217;re right, it&#8217;s been tough watching the Bulls give games away at the end.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>What has it been like being a Chicago sports fan over the last few years? Are you a Hawks fan?</strong></span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"> I&#8217;m a White Sox fan, so in 2012 my Chicago sports year year went like this:</span></p>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-size: small;"> -D Rose out with injury</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: small;"> -NHL lockout means no Hawks games in the fall</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: small;"> -Bears start 7-1; miss playoffs</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: small;"> -White Sox in 1st place on Labor Day; miss playoffs</span></li>
</ul>
<p><span style="font-size: small;"> It&#8217;s been fun, but my eternal sports-optimism is being challenged.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"> I am a big Hawks fan. Five years ago the Hawks had what I would consider the best deal in sports. For $8 you could get a student ticket in the 300 level. That&#8217;s when Toews and Kane were rookies. I spent every Wednesday night watching them develop into the superstars they are today. Those same tickets now cost $100, minimum.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>What is your favorite aspect of being an entrepreneur?</strong></span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"> The corporate world operates under the assumption that people are at their best between 8-5 while wearing uncomfortable clothes. I like sleeping in, staying up late and wearing athletic shorts as much as possible.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>What is your greatest fear, and how do you manage fear?</strong></span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"> Competition. Every time I go on TechCrunch or TicketNews I&#8217;m fearful that I&#8217;ll read something about someone doing something better or bigger than we are &#8212; and being completely blindsided by it. The only way we can manage that fear is by keeping up on our Competitive Intelligence, listening to our users and striving to improve every day.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>What are some of the biggest mistakes you&#8217;ve made?</strong></span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"> Not planning. Without a doubt, we execute better on ideas that have forethought and planning than on ideas we sit down and try to execute on right away. It&#8217;s boring, tedious and time-consuming to plan, but the increase in focus, consistency and output far outweighs the up-front &#8220;costs&#8221;.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>What 3 things would you tell college students who want to become entrepreneurs?</strong></span></p>
<ol>
<li><span style="font-size: small;"> Do what you love first, do what other people want you to do second. It sounds rebellious, but to be a successful entrepreneur you have to practice independence and leadership as much as possible.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: small;"> Find other people who have the same passion (for starting a business) as you do. They&#8217;re easier to find in college.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: small;"> Even if you&#8217;re a successful entrepreneur, you&#8217;ll never have as much free time as you do in college, so enjoy it as much as you can.</span></li>
</ol>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>Any books you would recommend?</strong></span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><a href="http://www.foundersatwork.com/index.html"> Founders at Work</a> by Jessica Livingston. It is a collection of interviews with successful entrepreneurs about their early days. The challenges these entrepreneurs faced are similar to the challenges we have experienced. Despite the challenges, each company eventually experienced success &#8212; making this a highly motivating read.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>What 3 pieces of advice would you offer to college students who are thinking about entrepreneurs?</strong></span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"> 1. Don&#8217;t be afraid to reach out to people on a whim. You&#8217;d be surprised how many will respond.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"> 2. Think for yourself and stand behind what you believe until someone rationally changes your mind. Don&#8217;t just go with the flow.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"> 3. Just do it.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>What would you say are the top three skills needed to be a successful entrepreneur?</strong></span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"> 1. Patience</span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"> 2. The ability to &#8220;Get Shit Done&#8221;</span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"> 3. The ability to inspire others.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>What motivates you?</strong></span><br />

<span style="font-size: small;"> $100 startup. Valuable lessons in there. Create something that solves a problem for people enough for them to want to pay for it. That&#8217;s how you create a sustainable business so you can keep solving people&#8217;s problems.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>What is your favorite aspect of being an entrepreneur?</strong></span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"> Not getting stressed out about not doing what I really want to do. Not being limited in what I can do. Being able to do whatever I want to, whenever I want to (within reason).</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>What has been your most successful form of marketing?</strong></span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"> Building a good, useful product.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>Do you have any hobbies that you make time for outside of work?</strong></span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"> Lol. Code. Coding is fun, so I do it in my non-work time. I also love Netflix.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>What sacrifices have you had to make to be a successful entrepreneur?</strong></span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"> Perceived social worth. Being okay with not being a doctor, or lawyer, or at a top name firm for whatever. You grow up conditioned to want to be all of those, so you sacrifice the perceived social worth people put on you for being those.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>What company or business do you admire the most and why?</strong></span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"> 37Signals. They build useful software, useful enough for their customers to directly pay for it.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>Is there anything else you want to add?</strong></span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">Love the initiative &#8211; and I think it would be really helpful for people. Especially Indians whose parents tell them to be doctors and lawyers. </span></p>
<p><strong>Pathik:</strong> <span style="font-size: small;">I didn&#8217;t even think of this until you brought it up, but one year we had a booth for RAAHI at an Indian vendors conference in St. Louis. A young doctor (probably in his 30&#8242;s) came up to us and started telling us about how he loves what we&#8217;re doing and that he would buy a t-shirt and put it on (over his dress shirt) while he walks the rest of the show to promote us because he wishes he did something like this. 				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><span style="font-size: small;">Several times over the last couple years I have experienced something so rare that each of these experiences have nestled themselves into my memory. What are these experiences you ask? Excellent customer service at fast food restaurants and the DMV. No not just any fast food restaurants &#8211; specifically the <a href="https://plus.google.com/118134394619628780122/about?gl=us&amp;hl=en">Taco Bell in Aurora, IL</a> near me (1000 N Farnsworth Ave Aurora, IL 60506) and the McDonald&#8217;s in Oak Brook, IL by my workplace.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;">So where does the DMV come in? We&#8217;ll get to that later [shudder].<span id="more-704"></span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;">In the summer of 2011 I had a few [20] cousins over at my place for a little [500+ people] shindig <a href="http://www.pathikbhatt.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/taco-bell-error-free-order-award.jpg"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-711" alt="Taco Bell Error Free Order Award" src="http://www.pathikbhatt.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/taco-bell-error-free-order-award-192x300.jpg" width="192" height="300" /></a>[wedding], and they had banned me from my basement because they were practicing for my reception dance. One of my only ungraceful cousins didn&#8217;t want to be in the dance so he decided to contribute by going on a late night Taco Bell run with me. He brought up everyone&#8217;s order [on several sheets of paper] and off we went. As I approached the drive-thru lane with my $60+ list of items I started getting that &#8220;oh great, this is going to be fun&#8221; feeling, but to my surprise the order taker was extremely pleasant throughout the whole process. She was so nice that I distinctively remember telling my cousin &#8220;wow, she was so nice!&#8221; On top of that they didn&#8217;t miss a single item &#8211; there should be some kind of award for that.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: large;"><strong>Consistently Great Service is Impressive</strong></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;">Fast forward to January 2013. I went to the same <a href="http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/11_20/b4228064581642.htm">Taco Bell drive-thru</a> recently and was greeted with the same level of niceness, but they forgot an item on a relatively small order. I didn&#8217;t realize until I got home, so I called back and they put my name on a list with the item. I didn&#8217;t get a chance to go back until 2 weeks later and they were still able to find me on the list and gave me my item. That&#8217;s good peoples!</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;">I&#8217;d like to digress here for a moment and just mention the good people of the <a href="https://plus.google.com/106023841403456022469/about?gl=US&amp;hl=en-US">Oak Brook, IL McDonald&#8217;s</a> (2111 Midwest Rd Oak Brook, IL 60523). Someone posted a review 10 months ago about this location and they literally took the words right out of my mouth in relation to my experience just a week ago.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-size: small;">Good service goes a long way &#8211; please keep it up!</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: large;"><strong>Now let&#8217;s go to the Aurora DMV </strong></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;">Oh, you get that sick to the stomach feeling from just thinking about that place too? After my last visit I started thinking about this question: why is it that the people of Taco Bell (and McDonald&#8217;s) can consistently provide great customer service while the people of the DMV almost always do the exact opposite? </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;">My wife went into the DMV 3 times and received 3 different instructions on how to fill out a form. Then I went in (making that trip #4 for the same form) earlier this month thinking to myself &#8220;how bad can it really be, I&#8217;ll just go there and be nice to them.&#8221; </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;">The first thing that I hear when I get to the counter and show the lady my form is &#8220;Why did you sign both names?&#8221; </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;">Me: [caught off guard and in disbelief] &#8220;What?&#8221;</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;">DMV Lady: &#8220;You can&#8217;t sign for other people.&#8221;</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;">Me: &#8220;I didn&#8217;t, that&#8217;s my wife&#8217;s signature, and that&#8217;s mine&#8221;</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;">DMV Lady: &#8220;Well it looks the same [angry scowl]. Take a number.&#8221;</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;">Instead of greeting people with &#8220;hello, how can I help you&#8221; they lead with an accusation &#8211; an unwarranted one at that! My experiences has been such every single time in the Aurora DMV. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: large;"><strong>Taco Bell Vs. the DMV: Competition</strong></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;">The main difference between the DMV and the fast food restaurants is competition. The DMV is a monopoly while Taco Bell and McDonald&#8217;s have competition. Not only do the restaurants compete with other chains, but they compete with their other locations as well. There are probably 3 of each type of restaurant within a 5 mile radius of where I live and where I work so if I have a bad experience at one location I can just go to another. That incentivizes the owners of these restaurants to train people to be friendly to customers. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;">The DMV is the only place you can get your license and sticker and title changed, etc. It doesn&#8217;t matter if they are nice to you or outright awful, if you want to drive you will go there. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: large;"><strong>Taco Bell Vs. the DMV: Time-to-service</strong></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;">The other big issue we have with the DMV is the wait time. Fast food restaurants give us what we want very quickly and send us on our way. The DMV says &#8220;take a number.&#8221; Not only that, but the numbers are in some nonsensical order so that you have to diligently pay attention to the numbers being announced for the whole entire hour that you&#8217;ll probably be sitting there just so you don&#8217;t miss your turn. If you&#8217;re at the DMV for more than one thing, then you get to take a 2nd number after your first task is completed and go wait again. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;">Taco Bell and McDonald&#8217;s service models align well with our expectations. With the advent of smart phones and instant access to all pieces of information and media at our fingertips we have grown more impatient as a people, and DMV&#8217;s have seemingly ignored this fact and done nothing to speed things up.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: large;"><strong>Taco Bell Vs. the DMV: Convenience</strong></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;">Taco Bell coined the term 4th Meal and in general is the only remaining fast food place open after 2AM (unless you have a 24 hour McDonald&#8217;s near you). They are there for you whenever you want them. The DMV, however, is only open during the hours you are at work on all but one day of the week. They expect you to make time for them, not the other way around. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: small;">Taco Bell is also more convenient because there are 3 or 4 of them just in Aurora alone whereas there is only one DMV location. The DMV in the next city is just far enough that it doesn&#8217;t make sense to go there. Unless of course there is a <span style="line-height: 21px;">significant</span> difference in the service.</span></span></p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><span style="font-size: small;">Kelley Direct claimed a spot in the top 3 in the US News <a href="http://www.usnews.com/education/online-education/mba">Best Online Graduate Business Programs</a> list released earlier this month behind Washington State University and Arizona State University. It&#8217;s great to see your MBA school getting recognized by others. The more positive visibility the better, and that has been the case since I joined the <a href="http://www.pathikbhatt.com/business-and-marketing/kelley-direct-mba-resources/">Kelley Direct Program</a> in 2012. In addition to getting bumped up to the top 15 ranked business schools by Bloomberg Businessweek, Kelley was also recognized for having the best MBA teachers and career services in the US. It&#8217;s no wonder why Kelley MBA students are the most satisfied B-school students in the country.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: small;">Even though number 3 isn&#8217;t bad, I was curious as to why <strong>Kelley Direct</strong> didn&#8217;t rank higher on this list. So I decided to take a look at other rankings that prospective students and employers typically look at and my suspicions were confirmed. One of the main ways a B-school gets its reputation is by its full-time ranking and its ability to place its students into jobs. This is not to take anything away from the other schools on this list, but Kelley takes these things very seriously (and I love it because of that). Here&#8217;s a quote from faculty chair of the Kelley Direct MBA Program, Phil Powell after seeing the US News rankings: “Our goal is to be number one,” Powell said. “Number three is good, but our goal is to become number one.”</span></p>

<p><span style="font-size: small;">I think the results are self-explanatory. At the very least you realize that there&#8217;s more to MBA school rankings than a single list. You have to do your research and really dive into the information about the schools that you&#8217;re interested in. Reach out to students, faculty and career services to find out more about the specific things you&#8217;re interested in.</span></p>
